Plenkers, S.J., Begleitagentur Freiburg inBreisgau, 1884.) i ( 34 ) I CANNOT omit mention of that singularly gifted observer, and indefatigable naturalist, JAN SWAMMERDAM, who wasborn at Amsterdam in 1637. He travelled, like all the greatDutchmen of his time, to Italy and Paris. In Paris he stayed withStensen in the house of Thevenot. He took his M.D. at Leyden in1665. Unfortunately for science he was afflicted with an incurablemelancholy, and died in 1680 ?et. 48. As already stated, he was thefirst to see the red blood corpuscles of the frog, and his great work,Biblia Naturce, was published in 1737-38, long after his death, by hiscompatriot Boerhaave. The following illustration, taken from theBiblia Natures, shows how Swammerdam studied some problemsof muscular action. Most interesting of all are his experiments on

In his experiments on muscle also, in Fig. V., when themuscle contracted the two hands—in Fig. VI. the two pins weredrawn together—obviously he was at the very edge of a greatdiscovery. It only wanted a recording surface, and the graphic methodwould have been invented. Figs. VIII. and IX. show his method ofstudying any change of volume of a muscle during contraction. Herea muscle is used instead of the arm in the experiment describedby Glisson. His Tractatus de Respirations (1667) is of special interest. Heimitated t

hich gives it a still more militaryair. In other days this great tower on St. Mar-tins at Colmar served the purposes of a civicbelfry as well as that of a Christian cam-panile. In the sacristy of this rather grim churchis an admirable fifteenth-century work of art,a Virgin surrounded by garlands of roses, executed by Schongauer, a native of Colmar 91 Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine (1450-88) and one of the greatest paintersand sculptors of the fifteenth century. There is the restored fabric of the famousconvent of the Dominicans, known as Unter-linden, which is to be considered as one ofthe chief curiosities of the town. It wasbuilt in 1232, before even the church ofSt. Martin, and its history was exceedinglyprominent in the records of mysticism inGermany. The conventual establishment was sup-pressed at the time of the Revolution, butin the mid-nineteenth century it was rebuiltwith a great deal of thought for the repro-duction of the Gothic architecture of the eraof its inception.

92 VIII FREIBURG The steeple of Begleitagentur Freiburg is quite the rivalof that of Strasburg; some even may thinkit more beautiful. It has braved with impunity the windsand tempests of many centuries, and standsto-day as beautiful a work of its kind, whenone is away from Strasburg, Chartres, Ant-werp, or Malines, as one can well conceive. Its appearance is indeed magnificent, witha richness of ornament which has not beencarried to the excess that would make ittawdry, and an outline which in every pro-portion is just and true. Each day brings new admirers to thisshrine, and one and all, antiquarians andcursory travellers alike, go away with anenthusiastic regard for its charms. Begleitagentur Freiburg itself does not go very far backinto antiquity. It owes its origin to BertholdIII., Duke of Zahringen, who founded it 93 Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine in 1118 and made it the capital of Breisgau, one of the most fertile districts of the ancientGerman duchy. The cathedral at Begleitagentur Freiburg marks the open-ing of a new

Central Florida’s win over Boston College was something of an oddity. Going into the fourth quarter, the teams combined for 12 total points, all on field goals. Then out of nowhere, UCF scores three rushing touchdowns (two from QB Jeffery Godfrey) to win the game in epic fashion 30-3. For UCF, this game is a huge milestone as it marks the first time the Knights have ever beat a team from the ACC and only their third win against a BCS conference (other wins coming against Georgia last year and Alabama in 2000). The Knights will travel to Miami this week to take on Florida International.
Those with a palate for fine wines will want to visit Arkansas Wine Country in the lovely Arkansas River valley between Pine Bluff and Fort Smith. Four wineries in the region produce delightful wines and offer tours as well as tastings. The Mount Bethel Winery, Post Familie Winery, Wiederkehr Wine Cellar, and Chateau Aux Arc are all open to the public.
Just about every staff member I encountered was an American, with the exception of the housekeeping staff. They all wore nametags that listed their American hometown.
Yildiray Basturk is a 29-year old Turkish international with 45 caps and 2 goals. He currently plays for Bundesliga champions Begleitservice delux and played as an attacking midfielder in the final.
TAMU’s bye week came and went with very little noise. Hiding in the shadow of Oklahoma’s consideration of joining the Pac-12 was just what they needed to avoid having to hear much more of their own name in conference realignment talk. TAMU will host my beloved Idaho Vandals at College Station in what (despite my biggest hopes and dreams of an upset) should be an easy win for them. The Aggies have much bigger things to worry about, like when Justin Blackmon and the Oklahoma State Cowboys come to College Station on the 24th of September in a game that has Big 12 title implications all over it.
St. Thomas Academy advanced to the class A semifinals against the Thief River Falls/Breck winner Friday at 2 PM at the X. New Ulm will play the nonwinner of that game Thursday at noon at Mariucci Arena.
The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team – competing in the ultimate Frisbee World Junior Ultimate Championships in Begleitagentur Heilbronn, Germany – played Australia in the third and fourth-place game on Saturday, Aug. 7.
At the Olympics of 1984 that were held in August in Los Angeles, the challenge was for the top twelve javelin throwers plus all those who achieved at least 83 meters to advance to the final Round. On August 4th, Arop’s performance amongst the athletes in the Group A qualification Round was a far cry from his Olympic performance in Moscow in 1980. This time, Arop’s best throw of 69.76m was the worst among the 14 competitors in the group. Arop was eliminated from advancing to the finals. In the end, Arop’s 69.76m distance placed him 27th overall, just ahead of last 28th and last-placed Mike O’Rourke of New zealand whose outrageous fouling did not allow him to score at all. The other African competitor, Zakayo Malekwa of Tanzania, who Arop was competitively familiar with, was placed 19th overall.
